A Night in the Old Marketplace is a brilliant Yiddish masterpiece that is now a modern musical, conceived and directed by Alexandra Aron, book and lyrics by Glen Berger, and music by Frank London.
I. L. Peretz wrote this play looking out at the world in 1907 creating a sprawling epic struggle to find meaning in a dark world on the brink of war. This thrilling musical spins a magical tale of men who wrestle with ghosts in order to right a past wrong, in a fantastic journey to rediscover the meaning of faith.
Ray Wills heads the cast as "the Badkhn", the charismatic entertainer who has become a bitter and cynical man with an insane plan to remake the world. Guil Fisher, takes on the role of "the Recluse", a Jewish mystic who lives in the mountains with his trained bear. Charlotte Cohn cast as the seductive Gargoyle that comes to life and revels in chaos. Deborah Grausman plays the angelic drowned bride Sheyndele and Steven Rattazzi plays her grieving lover, Nosn. Making up the ensemble are Melinda Blake, Mathew F. Burrow, Elisa Matthews, and Nicholas F. Saverine .
The rich eclectic score blends klezmer, jazz, classical and rock genres, and is brought to life by an international ensemble of musicians.
What Frank London has created is the essence of what Youngish & Yiddish is all about. Frank's take: "We are really trying to make Yiddish Theater that is not nostalgic, not self-referential, intelligent, fun, challenging....a bit of the anti-Fiddler. Think Tom Waits or Kurt Weill do klezmer. It is especially interesting to people interested in new Jewish theater and culture."
